Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults is very important to us.
Marygate House Holy Island acknowledges the duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of everyone who visits, volunteers or works at Marygate House Holy Island. Regarding children and vulnerable adults, we are committed to ensuring safeguarding practices reflect statutory responsibilities, government guidance and complies with the best practice and requirements of the Diocese of Newcastle.
The policy recognises that the welfare and interests of everyone is paramount in all circumstances. It aims to ensure that regardless of age, gender, religion or beliefs, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or socioeconomic background, all have a positive experience of their retreat/visit to Marygate in a safe and respectful environment protected from abuse whilst participating in retreats or visits.
As part of our safeguarding policy Marygate will promote and prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children and young people and vulnerable adults. We will work to ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities in respect of safeguarding and is provided with appropriate learning opportunities to recognise, identify and respond to signs of abuse, neglect and other safeguarding concerns relating to children and young people and vulnerable adults. We will ensure appropriate action is taken in the event of incidents/concerns of abuse and support provided to the individual/s who raise or disclose the concern. We will ensure that confidential, detailed and accurate records of all safeguarding concerns are maintained and securely stored and prevent the employment/deployment of unsuitable individuals. We will ensure robust safeguarding arrangements and procedures are established and maintained.
The policy and procedures will be widely promoted and are mandatory for everyone involved with Marygate House Holy Island. Failure to comply with the policy and procedures will be addressed without delay and may ultimately result in dismissal/exclusion from the organisation.
The policy will be reviewed a year after implementation and then every three years, or in the following circumstances changes in legislation and/or government guidance as required by the Safeguarding Officers of the Diocese of Newcastle.
The Trust requires all staff and volunteers to have undergone an DBS check.
Preferably, all non-parental supervision should be by people who have recently been DBS checked. However, as a minimum, we require that all groups using Marygate House, or associated facilities, where there are children or vulnerable adults included within the group are to have a minimum of one adult member of the group to have undergone an enhanced DBS check within the last three years. The sex of the adult is to reflect that of the children, young person(s) or vulnerable adult(s). Where this is a mixed sex group (boys & girls), there should be a minimum of two responsible adults one female and one male, both having undergone a DBS check within the last three years.
We recommend group organisers seek and adhere to the instructions of the safeguarding officers from their own church, diocese, or organisation, ensuring they comply with best practice and legislation.
Adopted December 2017
If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or is at risk of harm, do not hesitate to contact the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser for advice and support.
